This project was the restoration of a 1920s fisherman’s cottage on a hill overlooking the harbor of Port Jefferson, Long Island. The original building had fallen into disrepair, but the view and location caught the owner’s eye. The pre-existing code violations were resolved, the services to the building were upgraded, and a third-bedroom extension was added to create a year-round home for a family. The original basic construction technique of timber frame with plywood sheathing and timber battens that cover the plywood joints was replicated, with added insulation. In keeping with New England tradition, the owner chose to paint the floors up the upper level with white paint, adding to the sense of floating in the trees above the harbor. BArC Studio commissioned a special version of Brendan Ravenhill's ADA sconce in brass and white for the project.
