'Balance' was our conceptual driver for this project, in reference to the 'weigh scales' of the Italian name. The space chosen was very long and tall, so our first challenge was to create intimacy and tranquility. We essentially made three public zones; an open area by the window, a bar area which is created by a ‘wrap-around’ feature-clad walnut, and a formal dining area beyond. The light openness of the front is counterbalanced by the kitchen, an area of intense activity enclosed in another walnut box at the back of the space. It was important to maintain a relationship between the live activity of the kitchen and the rest of the space so a large opening was made to allow visual and physical contact between the two spaces.
